I don't think think that the picture is of assault because maybe the soldier who came back was just happy to go back home and during this time I think that the cameras operated slower than normal, so if the woman was being assaulted then maybe you could be able to see her trying to push herself away from him because if she didn't allow the man to kiss her then she would have reacted as if trying to free herself from him. If the man just randomly grabbed her, the cameras back then probably could not have been able to just snapshot the photo, a struggling woman could have been captured instead.
